Have you known how to take good care of your jewelry?

Every piece of jewelry requires special care to keep it looking great in its original form. Even if it is an expensive piece or a trendy one, knowing how to properly care for your jewelry is essential. Although jewelry can be crafted from different materials, many of the same rules apply to the care of it. Here are 7 basic rules when caring for jewelry:

#1: Remove your jewelry at the right time

Jewelry is very delicate, no matter what the materials are. Remember to always remove your jewelry when working with your hands or taking part in activities that involve chemicals or abrasives. Below are some situations you MUSt take off your jewelry:

  • Swimming
  • Cleaning the house
  • Gardening
  • Playing sports

#2: Put your jewelry on last

It’s best to put on your jewelry after you’ve finished with the whole outfit. Whether you’re wearing gold or leather, the chemicals from your cologne, hair products can damage your pieces. Try to think of jewelry as the finishing touch for your look.

#3: Lotion and Jewelry are like chalk and cheese

Even though occasional exposure to hand/body lotion won’t do much damage to most fine jewelry, it still can on long term use or on trendy pieces. Moreover, the build-up of lotion products can lead to more frequent cleaning of your jewelry. The best option is to put lotion on after you’ve taken your jewelry off at night.

#4: Store your jewelry separately

Your jewelry can be damaged by dirt and chemicals during storage. This is caused by pieces knocking together or getting tangled. The best way to solve this problem is to store your items separately so they can’t touch one another.

#5: Check your jewelry regularly

Your jewelry is easy to get dirty and damaged. Before putting on any pieces of jewelry, take a good look at the items. Then you will know which pieces need cleaning or repair.

#6: Know your pieces before cleaning

Before attempting to clean your jewelry, it’s important to know about the materials used in your items. There are very different procedures for cleaning gold rings and leather bracelets.

After figuring out the material, try to do some research about them. This way, you’ll know what to do with your favorite pieces when it needs cleaning.

#7: Let your jewelry dry thoroughly after cleaning

If you clean your jewelry, it may seem sufficient to pat it dry with a clean cloth and then store it. However, small amounts of moisture left over from cleaning can destroy your pieces. You need to wait at least an hour after cleaning any piece before you put it back on you again. This will give the moisture enough time to fully evaporate.

Caring for your jewelry is a way to make it last longer. Whether it’s a wedding ring or punk bracelet, every item looks better and lasts longer when you know how to take great care of it. Have patience, and keep your jewelry wardrobe as fresh as new.
